Caye Caulker is a small limestone coral island off the coast of Belize in the Caribbean Sea, measuring about 5 miles (8.0 Km ) – North to south – by less than l mile (1.6 km) East to west.

Local residents have traditionally made their living from the sea, specifically from the spiny lobsters, conch and a variety of fish that inhabit its warm waters. It has also long been a budget traveler’s center, but in recent years, tourists of all ages and income have begun to appreciate the island’s unique atmosphere.

On Caye Caulker, there are no cars, no fumes and no hassle; just soft breezes caressing your face, and fresh seafood, quality waters and the second largest barrier reef at its doorstep. The Go Slow sign that identifies the island’s slow movement with golf cart and bicycles is a no hassle environment. The easygoing attitude is due to the diversity of cultures like Creole, Mestizo, Garifuna, Asian, and Caucasian. Their music will mesmerize you like hearing the reggae beat, Reggaeton, Punta and Country, just to mention a few.

While the increase in visitors has resulted in more construction and a strain on the island fledging infrastructure, the surrounding nature remains both accessible and enthralling. The island is an ideal base for snorkeling as it has the two marine reserves at its door step. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve and the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve is breathtaking when snorkeling. Furthermore, you could do more activities like Scuba diving, fishing, wind surfing, and kayaking, to mention a few.

The northern part of the island – a tempting destination for kayakers- is mostly mangroves, which are home to an amazing variety of birdlife. Other than that, all visitors should be sure to schedule in plenty of time for swinging in a hammock and enjoying the Caribbean breeze, which is indeed a legitimate activity on Caye Caulker.
